Roy Bivens CEO of Diamond Orthopedics

Roy Bivens

Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Roy T. Bivens has over 25 years of experience working with many of the largest industrial, healthcare and financial services companies in the United States. Roy started his career at GE in 1990 where he spent 8 years serving in various leadership roles, including National Accounts Manager covering 3 of the GE’s largest customers, and a senior member of the GE Corporate Audit staff. After leaving GE, he started Orion Advisory where he has been a Managing Partner and owner since 1998.  Roy has extensive experience with healthcare and financial services companies, including Cleveland Clinic, Carolinas Health Care System, Novant Health, MedStar Health, Cadence Health, JP Morgan Chase, NY Federal Reserve, Wells Fargo and Nationwide Investments. He has also advised several Boards of Directors, a number of startup companies, and currently serves on several management boards
 
Under Roy’s leadership, Orion Advisory has successfully helped hundreds of medical teams design and implement cultural change, build leaders and develop programs to prepare for and navigate the future of healthcare. As a co-author of Experiencing Improvement, Roy shares the successes achieved in working with the caregivers of Cleveland Clinic, including the groundbreaking customization and adaptation of non-industry tools into healthcare to better control costs and increase quality of care. Roy’s diverse healthcare experience includes over 20 medical service lines such as heart, cancer, digestive disease, imaging, medicine, neurology, orthopedics, pathology, and pharmacy.
 
Mr. Bivens earned an M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in 2001 and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at State in 1990.

J.D. Williams

Vice President of Sales

J.D. is an accomplished sales and management executive with over 30 years of demonstrated achievements directing orthopedic sales organizations and distribution networks.  J.D. is a creative problem solver, mentor, team builder and communicator with a proven ability to forge new business relationships which increase efficiency while generating revenue.  Skilled in talent recruiting, asset protection, financial management and customer relations, J.D. is a strategic, customer focused executive. 

J.D. began his orthopedic career in 1987 with Richards Medical, now known as Smith & Nephew. After an award winning eight years, J.D. was offered the opportunity to be a Distributor for Dow-Corning Wright, now Wright Medical. During the next seventeen years, with the help of his team, J.D. enjoyed another award-winning tenure.  Named Distributor of the Year multiple times, J.D. and his team set many sales milestones for the company that still stand today.

Currently, J.D. is President / CEO of CarMel Medical Inc., a medical advisory firm with a focus on orthopedics seeking to help prospective clients solve day-to-day strategic challenges and achieve transaction related goals.

Mr. Williams earned an M.S. in Mass Communication from Murray State University in 1975 and a B.S. in Radio / T.V. Film in 1973.

Charles W. Federico

Executive Chairman
Mr. Charles W. Federico has over 40 years of experience in the medical device industry. Charlie was the former Chairman of the Board, Lead Director, Compensation & Governance Committee Chairman and Audit Committee Member for MAKO Surgical Group, which was acquired by Stryker (SYK) for $1.65B in 2013.
 
Prior to Charlie’s role with MAKO, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Orthofix International N.V., a global diversified medical device company, from 2001 to 2006. He served as President of Orthofix Inc. from 1996 to 2001. From 1985 to 1996, he served as the President and General Manager at Smith & Nephew Endoscopy (formerly Dyonics, Inc.).  From 1981 to 1985, he served as the Vice President of Dyonics and served as its Director of Marketing and General Manager.  Additionally, Mr. Federico held various management and marketing positions at General Foods Corporation, Air Products Corporation, Puritan Bennett Corporation and LSE Corporation.
 
Charlie currently serves as Co-Chairman of the Board and Independent Committee Chairman for LENSAR, an Ophthalmology laser technology and medical device company. He is a current Board Advisor to BioFuse Medical Technologies. Charlie’s previous Board member roles include Power Medical Interventions, Orthofix International, BioMimetic Therapeutics, Alveolus, SRI Surgical Express and OrthoRx.  He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation, the American Sports Medicine Institute, and as an Advisory Member to the School of Biomedical Engineering and Science at Virginia Tech and Wake Forest University.  Mr. Federico received a B.S. in Marketing from Fordham University.

Doug Craft

John “Doug” D. Craft

Chief Executive Officer, Medicraft, Inc.

Doug Craft is the principal and chief executive officer of Atlanta-based Medicraft, Inc., which is one of the largest independent distributors for Medtronic, the world leader in medical technology and pioneering therapies.
 
He has devoted his entire career to the medical industry, initially concentrating in the sale of spinal implants, which he continues today. Over the past three decades his commercial interests have expanded to include evaluating, consulting and developing businesses in the medical field generally, including but not limited to neuro-intraoperative monitoring, biologic agents, orthopedic reconstruction implants, surgical navigation systems and spinal implant device design. Doug is a highly experienced entrepreneur who is continually exploring opportunities to multiply investments in medical businesses and technologies.
 
Doug has lived in Atlanta since 1984, where he and his wife of 27 years, Trisha, have 3 children and one grandchild. The Crafts are actively involved in philanthropic, civic and cultural institutions.
 
Mr. Craft earned a B.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Mississippi State University

Mark Miles Medtech Executive Diamond Orthopedics

Miles H. Marks

Executive Vice President, Medicraft, Inc.

He is currently Executive Vice President of Medicraft, Inc. one of the largest independent distributors for Medtronic, with products for spine and biologics. He began his career more than 20 years ago in Orthopedic Sales.
 
Mr. Marks is a medical device entrepreneur, with commercial interests in companies focused on neuro-intraoperative monitoring, biologic agents, orthopedic reconstruction implants, surgical navigation systems, and spinal implant device design.
 
He and his wife, Jenny, live in North Atlanta with their four children. Together they maintain active involvement in several non-profit community service organizations aimed at improving the health and quality of life for both children and adults. These roles include serving as Co-Presidents of Pace Academy’s parent organization, serving on the Finance Committee for St. Anne’s Day School, membership in the Circle of Care for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and serving as a member of the board as well as Chairman of the Board for Chastain Horse Park, a therapeutic riding facility. Miles enjoys being actively involved as a parent and alum at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
 
Miles attended Mercer University and received his degree with a major in Business and minors in English and Communications.

L. Andrew Koman, M.D.

Chief Medical Officer and Board Member

Dr. Andrew Koman, a hand and pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, is listed in both The Best Doctors in America and America's Top Doctors. His research focuses on improving the function of children with cerebral palsy, congenital hand disorders, and nerve damage and adults with complex hand damage, including surgical techniques and botulinum toxins, which he introduced into clinical practice. He is internationally recognized in congenital (pediatric hand), upper extremity vascular disorders, chronic pain and nerve injury, hand reconstruction, and microsurgery. He is Chair of orthopaedic surgery and director of the hand fellowship.

Koman is a former president of The Southern Orthopaedic Association, The Eastern Orthopaedic Association, The North Carolina Orthopaedic Association, The Southeastern Hand and the Hand Forum. He was the founder and first president of the North Carolina Society of Surgery of the Hand and is a past president of the American Society of Surgery of the Hand. Koman is editor‐in-chief of the Journal of the Surgical Orthopaedic Advances. He has published three books and over 200 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He has received the Clinical Research (Kappa Delta) award from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Society and the Huene Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.

Lisa Ferrara, Ph.D.

Bio-mechanical Expert

Dr. Lisa Ferrara is currently the CEO/President of OrthoKinetic Technologies LLC, an independent consulting firm whose purpose is to guide medical device companies in the areas of regulatory and preclinical strategies for FDA submissions. She is also CEO of OrthoKineticTesting Technologies, LLC, a medical device testing facility that provides a ‘one stop shop’ for medical device evaluation, from proof of concept to commercialization.

Robert Anderson Doctor

Bob Anderson, M.D.

Leading Foot & Ankle Specialist

Dr. Anderson is the founding orthopedic surgeon of the O.L. Miller Foot and Ankle Institute of OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina where he has been practicing since 1989.  He recently joined the Titletown Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Clinic in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Dr. Anderson is fellowship trained in foot and ankle disorders (Dr. John Gould, Milwaukee WI, 1988) with a large experience in sport related injuries.  He served as a team orthopedist to the Carolina Panthers from 2000-2017 and is now an associate team physician to the Green Bay Packers.  Additionally, Dr. Anderson has served as the Chairman of the Foot and Ankle Subcommittee for the NFL since 2003 and was recently named the Co-Chair of the NFL’s Musculoskeletal Committee, overseeing all orthopaedic injuries and research in professional football.  Dr. Bob Anderson is an active consultant to a number of NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB teams and numerous universities. 

Dr. Anderson’s accomplishments and experiences also include:  Co-founder of the OrthoCarolina Foot and Ankle Fellowship program; Chief of the Foot and Ankle Service at Carolinas Medical Center (1989-2015), including the role of Vice-Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at that institution; past President of the Medical Staff of Carolinas Medical Center and its approximately 1,700 physician members; past President of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society;  Co-Editor of the 9th edition of Mann’s: Surgery of the Foot and Ankle; former Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Techniques in Foot and Ankle Surgery; associate Editor/Reviewer for JBJS, JAAOS, FAI, AJSM and numerous other peer-review publications and Author/Editor of numerous chapters and manuscripts.

Dr. Bob Anderson was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attended the University of Mississippi where he was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame.  He completed his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  He is married to Jean Anderson and has three sons.

David L. Helfet, M.D.

Leading Orthopedic Trauma Specialist

Dr. David L. Helfet is annually ranked as one of New York Magazine's "Best Doctors in New York" and Castle‐Connolly's "America's Top Doctors." Dr. Helfet is currently Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at both Hospital for Special Surgery and New York‐Presbyterian Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Helfet is designated as the Orthopedic Trauma specialist for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the New York Police Department (NYPD), and New York State Police and provides advanced orthopedic care to members who are injured in the line of duty. Dr. Helfet has published extensively on orthopedic trauma topics including numerous articles and book chapters. He frequently presents at both national and international conferences on treatment of orthopaedic trauma. He has received such visiting lectureships as the Presidential Guest and Watson‐Jones Memorial Lecture of the British Orthopaedic Association, and has been the recipient of many honors and awards including the Philip D. Wilson Jr. Teaching Award.
